Endangered Breeding Birds on Koos

Aufwind is funding a project to protect endangered waders and water birds on Koos Island in the Greifswald Bodden. The aim is to preserve the island as a breeding ground for endangered species in the long term.

According to monitoring, Koos Island has proven to be a particularly valuable refuge for limousine species. On the mainland, predatory mammals such as foxes and raccoon dogs pose a threat to breeding birds. The island location offers potential for a relatively undisturbed breeding phase.

The funding from Aufwind will now be used to improve the gate and fence system on the island. This will protect the nests from predators and thus help to preserve the threatened populations. Species that are highly endangered in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, such as redshank, lapwing, little ringed plover and shelduck, will benefit from this.
