The Barn Owl Gets Help

The barn owl (Tyto alba), once widespread in the Bergisches Land, has become increasingly rare in recent decades. Its population has declined sharply, so that it is now one of the endangered bird species in the region. In order to provide the barn owl with better living conditions, the Mittlere Wupper Biological Station together with Aufwind have implemented an important measure.

Thanks to a generous donation from Aufwind, new nesting boxes for barn owls were hung at various locations in the Bergisches Land region in cooperation with Roman Jähne. The weatherproof wooden boxes provide the owls with safe nesting sites and protect their young from enemies and the effects of weathering.

The first checks of the nesting boxes this spring already showed that the measure was successful. If the barn owls continue to take up the offers well, a rebound of the population in the Bergisches Land can be expected in the next few years.
